Memoir
There were no better years at Foshay for music than 1966-1969. Mrs. Helen Bicknell, Mrs. Charlotte Fowler and Mr. Quiroz made magic happen. They took a bunch of African American and Asian American youth and instructed them in classical music at levels you don't see today. We had something called Concert Honor Orchestra and Symphonic Band. Tri-M or Modern Music Masters was a honor we all strived to become and earn. We all had uniforms of white shirts/blouses and white pants/skirts. And the blue sweater. The blue sweater had the Foshay F patch sewn in but we were allowed to wear the medals we won in music competitions. Shedrick Wise had the most medals of anyone. He played piano accompaniment for most of the solo, trios and duets. If they won a medal, so did he. We took trips to music camp every year where we had more fun than learning about music. I believe the room at Foshay was 163 where we played, laughed, learned. My tribute is to those teachers and all they did for all of us. A few friends to mention: Anya Lockett, Carlton Little, Chelsey James, Channing Ahn, Darlyne Dandridge, Alan Jones,Craig Flack, Eddie Jew, Robert James, Charles Veal (RIP), Kevin Blount, Teddy Edwards, Rufus Olivier, Jared Stewart. Too many names to mention but these were just a few of the friends I made and I hope that their life sojourns have been fulfilling.
Those three years were among the best of my life.
