Description
Algebra II expands on the mathematical content of Algebra I and Geometry. There is no single unifying theme. Instead, many new concepts and techniques are introduced that will be basic to more advanced courses in mathematics and the sciences and useful in the workplace. In general terms the emphasis is on abstract thinking skills, the function concept, and the algebraic solution of problems in various content areas. Students who master Algebra II will gain experience with algebraic solutions of problems in the various content areas, including the solution of systems and quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, the binomial theorem, and the complex number system. In this course students will know and be able to: • Solve equations and inequalities involving absolute value • Solve systems of linear equations and inequalities in two and three variables • Demonstrate knowledge of how real and complex numbers are related both arithmetically and graphically • Add, subtract, multiply and divide complex numbers • Be adept at operations on polynomials, including long division • Factor polynomials representing the difference of squares, perfect square trinomials, and the sum and difference of two cubes • Add, subtract, multiply, divide, reduce and evaluate rational expressions with monomial and polynomial denominators • Solve and graph quadratic equations • Demonstrate and explain the effect that changing a coefficient has on the graph of quadratic functions • Graph quadratic functions and determine the maxima, minima, and zeros of the function • Prove simple laws of logarithms • Know the laws of fractional exponents and understand exponential functions • Determine the truth of specific algebraic statements involving rational expressions, radical expressions, or logarithmic or exponential functions • Derive summation formulae for arithmetic series and for both finite and infinite geometric series • Know the binomial theorem and use it to expand binomial expressions • Use fundamental counting principles to compute combinations and permutations • Use combinations and permutations to compute probabilities

Assignment

Algebra 2,

I have attached the homework consisting of 12 problems where you will use the different methods that we learned to solve for the roots of the quadratic equations.

I really enjoyed working with all of you and look forward to seeing you in the future. Come visit me in the middle school in Mrs. Diaz's room!

Have a nice weekend!

-Mr. D

Due:

Assignment

I have attached the HW that will be due on Friday. It consists of 12 problems: in the first 2, you will solve the equations by factoring; in the second 4, you will use the square root method; in the last four, you will solve the quadratics by completing the square AND also check your solutions by factoring. Finally, answer BOTH parts a. and b. of questions 11 and 12. If you cannot access the document, please come see me tomorrow and I will make a copy for you. Any questions, I will be available during lunch and nutrition as well.

On Friday, we will cover how to solve quadratics using the quadratic formula. There will be a Homework Review following that (which is why is it imperative to do your homework!) and then we will move into a fun group game. I'm sad that Friday will be my last day teaching all of you, but I really want to thank you for everything these past 10 weeks. It really has been a pleasure to work with and learn from all of you!

-Mr. D

Due:

Assignment

Quiz Corrections and 10 problems on the factoring and square root method to solve quadratics (see attached worksheet) will be due on Wednesday.

Remember, on your quiz corrections:
1. Re-write each problem that you did not receive full credit on.

2. Solve the problem completely, showing ALL work.

3. Provide a written explanation of where you made the mistake in each problem

ex.) I did not factor the numerator of the first rational expression using the CROSS method, so I was unable to cancel out the (3x+4) in the denominator of the second rational expression.

Also, please come to class prepared with ONE real-life application of Quadratics. I am not asking for more than ONE application, and please do not just print something out without reading and understanding it. Come prepared to discuss your findings. I will be collecting this!!!

Finally, please come see me if you haven't signed up for an interview yet.

-Mr. D

Due:

Assignment

Over the weekend, I want you all to research real-life applications of Quadratics. Please do not just print something out without reading and understanding it. Come prepared to discuss your findings. I will be collecting this!!!

Please come see me if you haven't signed up for an interview yet. Have a nice weekend!

-Mr. D

Due:

Assignment

I have attached a review homework set that addresses all of the topics that we have covered on rational expressions: multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting. Please complete only the ODD problems on this assignment, except #7 in the last section on adding/subtracting, for Thursday. If you want more practice, you can try the even problems as well.

For those of you that did not sign up for Delta Math, you must sign up tonight and come during nutrition tomorrow to practice those problems. All students that did not receive 100% on this assignment, you may still receive partial credit (70%) if you complete it by Thursday.

Come for your scheduled interview times the rest of this week, and if you missed your time, please come see me as well.

-Mr. D

Due:

Assignment

I have attached the sign up form for Delta Math. I need everyone to sign up this weekend and complete the first assignment that I have posted. I adjusted it so that it consists of 8 problems:
4 that deal with adding and subtracting rational expressions and 4 that deal with adding and subtracting rational expressions.

You can attempt as many problems as you would like, but in order to receive full credit, you need to get 2 correct responses in the first two sections and 4 correct responses in the third section.

We will finish going over adding and subtracting rational expressions and review all of rational expressions because there will be a quiz on Thursday.

Have a great 3 day weekend (you should have more than enough time to complete this assignment!), and see you on Tuesday.

-Mr. D
