Course Description:
Physical Education focuses on the health and well being of each student, providing comprehensive levels of lifetime fitness activities. It is designed to incorporate knowledge of fitness through a variety of physical activities leading to the children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social well being. All instruction is based on MYP fundamental concepts: communication, intercultural awareness and comprehensive learning.
The curriculum will include but not limited to movement skills, conditioning, sports, games, and an understanding that all are related to health and well being. Students will constantly be made aware of the IB learner profile and will be encouraged to aspire to develop them as their profile own personal characteristics. Participation in a variety of physical activities will allow students to select and enjoy activities that will enhance their self-esteem, self-reliance, and personal will being.
IB Learner Profile: Physical Education students in an IB program will be knowledgeable, principled, risk-takers, balanced and good communicators.
Knowledgeable: Students will explore worldwide sports and fitness activities through participation and research.
Principled: Students will act with integrity and honesty by demonstrating good sportsmanship. They will take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that may follow.
Risk-takers: Students will face new activities and physical challenges throughout the school year. Having an open mind will lead to life changing habits that will help guide them with the ability to explore new ideas and strategies.
Balanced: Students will have the ability to balance sports, academics and social skills by exploring new challenges in the everyday classroom.
Communicators: Through physical education the students will learn how to communicate as a team through movements and physical actions. Students will learn to communicate through leadership roles.

MYP Objectives:
1. Help students become physically educated: A physically educated person is one who has mastered the necessary movement skills to participate confidently in many different forms of physical activity, values physical fitness and understands that both are related to health and overall well being.
2. Develop a commitment to physical activity and physical fitness: Many different elements of age appropriate physical activity and instruction help to develop a commitment to lifelong health, physical activity and physical education.
3. Goals of Physical Education:
A. Movement skills and movement knowledge: Students need to develop effective motor skills and to understand the fundamentals of movement by practicing and analyzing purposeful movement.
B. Self-Image and Personal development: Students develop and maintain a positive self-image and strive to become the best that they can be through planned physical education.
C. Social Development: Students develop appropriate social behaviors by working independently and with others during planned physical activity.
4. Combining Physical Education and Health Education: Students will learn ways that Physical Education and Health Education can be taught together. Students will be able to identify muscles, bones and arteries, while stretching, participating and taking heart rate. Students will gain an understanding of how injuries occur and how to prevent them.
Role of the areas of interaction in Physical Education: The areas of interaction will be at the core of teaching physical education curriculum at Foshay Learning Center. The physical education department will map the areas of interaction for all units taught.
Topics: Team sports, muscle strengthening, cardiovascular training/endurance, personal fitness, flexibility, health and hygiene.
Teaching Methodology:
Demonstration, group practice, peer evaluation, teacher evaluation, and editing and correcting.
Course Requirements:
1. Students are expected to attend class, dress in blue shorts, white T-shirt and appropriate athletic shoes.
2. Prepare a physical education folder for notes, statistics, hand-outs and diagrams.
3. Participate in all group activities/ Participate in personal fitness activities.
4. Complete all written assignments/diagrams.
5. Social skills: Students will have the opportunity to develop and maintain positive attitudes, self-control, refer to others by their name, listen attentively, cooperate with others through teamwork, learn and practice sportsmanship. In addition, students will comply with the following:
a. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
b. Speak with words that build others up.
c. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
d. Follow directions the first time.
e. Follow BP’s: Be punctual, Be prepared, and Be productive.
Participation and Effort:
Students will dress for Physical Education. It is Mandatory!!!!If improperly dressed, students will be marked non-dressed. Three non-dresses will result in a lower grade. (Students who consistently fail to dress will receive an unsatisfactory grade in Work Habits and Cooperation). All students are expected to dress while engaging in the physical education class.
MYP Assessment Criteria:
Points are awarded to students on a daily basis, through actively participating in physical education, displaying a positive attitude, follows directions, turning in homework assignments and monitoring personal progress will obtain these points. Students will have the opportunity to earn 5 points per day based on dressing in complete PE attire. Students appropriate behavior which includes cooperating with staff and peers, staying in the designated area and following all school rules.
